Ts wild Mandji - The Wild Man games in the Upper Valais
(Ts wild Mandji)
Ts wild Madji (The Wild Man) is a traditional custom that has evolved over the centuries into a theatrical presentation. The core forms the hunt for the wild man (the counterpart of the village community), whose offence to the village community is to be charged in a court case (scapegoat motif). There is no standard text for this. The performances will presumably go back to late mediaeval traditions. For 19th and 20th Century, all known venues and performances have been compiled in a work (Laura Margelist, 2009). Today the tradition continues in Baltschieder, most recently in 1994 and 2007. In Baltschieder, a professionalisation of tradition is achieved by the fact that authors create a new text for each of the performance: texts by Adolf Fux for the performance of 1956, by Pierre Imhasly for the performances from 1971, 1974 (for the Swiss Television) and 1984, and Bruno Zenhäusern and René salt generator for the performance of 1994.
LEARNING AND TRANSMISSION
Central for inclusion on the list is the living transmission and metamorphosis of a traditional custom, which were underlined by the contemporary writers (Adolf Fux, Pierre Imhasly). This results in a constant change and adaptation of the custom to the particular social and historical situation. Baltschieder and Ts wild Mandji provide an excellent example of the acquisition and change in the living tradition.
