QUANDO
St. Anthony the Abbot, 17th January
St. Antonio Abate Feast in Cologno Monzese
On the evening of 17th of January, the small town of Cologno Monzese celebrates St. Anthony, the Abbot, with the blessing of animals and a bonfire. The meeting point is in Pieve San Giuliano, the parish church in piazza San Matteo. People usually arrive at 8 o'clock in the evening having with them their pets, especially cats and dogs, who are blessed by the priest in the churchyard in front of the parish church (Pieve). The procession starts from Piazza San Matteo and it is followed by the Cologno Marching Band. Some of the pilgrims carry a torch, others their pets on a leash. The parade goes along the streets of the old town and it arrives in an open space next to the public swimming pool, where a bonfire has been prepared, far away from houses and surrounded by barriers so to guarantee people safety. Pallets, different types of wood, dry branches and cardboards are burnt in the pyre. Next to the fire, there is a stand with some "vin brulè" (warm mulled wine), tea and sweets. In 2011 there was a second bonfire in an area between Cologno Monzese and San Maurizio al Lambro, which drew together people from both towns.
COMUNITÀ
Cologno Monzese Pro Loco is responsible for the organization of the bonfire.
